STAUNTON, VA., October 6.-Mrs. Nellie E. Stewart, wife of E. E. Stewart, a prominent citizen citizen, died last night, aged seventy-five years, after a prolonged illness. She is survived by her husband, one daughter-Miss Belle E.-two sisters-Mrs. M. E. Thornburn and Mrs. Belle E. Kilgore-and one brother, Robert Giltock, of Lexington. WILLIAMSBURG, A., March 24.-James N. St. John, aged about seventy years, died in his home here this morning after an illness of several months. Mr. St. John, who was a native of Canada, moved to Williamsburg from Detroit, Mich., nearly twenty years ago, and had been an active and useful citizen of this community. He is survived by his widow and one son, Orville St. John.

                                 Mrs. Z. V. Scherrill.
MARION, VA., March 24.-Mrs. Z. V. Scherrill died at her homehere yesterday, after an illness of many months. She was educated at Marion Female College, while Dr. J. J. Scherer was in charge of that institution, and shortly after completing he education, was married to Dr. Z. V. Scherrill, a great part of her life being spent in Marion. She joined the Lutheran Church early in life, and was an active worker. Funeral services were conducted at the Lutheran Church here to-day and at St. James's Church, at St. Calir's Bottom , near where she was born and reared, and there she was buried.

                                 Miss Bettie I. Smith.
  HEATHSVILLE, VA., March 24.-Miss Bettie I. Smith died on Monday at the home of her niece, Mrs. B. H. B. Hubbard, in White Stone, Lancaster County. She was about sixty-eight years of age, and widely and prominently connected in Virginia and Washington. She is survived by one sister, a nun in Georgetown Convent; and a number of nieces and nephews. Miss Smith was a native of Loudon County, but made her home for a number of years in Northumberland and Lancaster Counties, first with her brother, the late Lloyd T. Smith, and later with her niece, Mrs. Robert H. Chilton, Kilmanock and Mrs. B. H. Hubbard, White Stone. Miss Smith was well and widely known and most highly esteemed. William Simpson died on Saturday at the University Hospital, Charlottesville. He was a native of Norfolk and is survived by two sisters, Mrs. G. M. Bastable, of Richmond, and Mrs. H. C. Easterday, of Washington, and one brother, S. W. Simpson of Calverton, Va.

Funeral services for Robert Stevens, former resident of this city, whose death occurred in Chicago, will be held Monday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Joseph's Catholic Church. The burial will be in Blandford Cemetery. The Rev. Charles Comiskey, the assistant rector, will officate and celebrate requiem mass.

  Funeral services for Mrs. Ola Mae Shipley, of 900 Fauquier street, Berkley, who died at a local hospital, Tuesday morning, were conducted at the funeral home of Graham and Sykes, 124 East Berkley avenue, yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. B. L. Rhodes, pastor of the Berley avenue Baptist church, assisted by Rev. W. E. Johnson, pastor of the Nazarene church, officiated. Mrs.  B. L. Rhodes and Miss Jordan sang "Beautiful Isle of Somwhere" and "Asleep in Jesus." The attendance was large and there were many beautiful flowers.
Silverstream Council No. 16, Degree of Pocahontas, conducted a grave service.
Pallbearers were Chester Wilcox, Edward Shipley, J. Shipley, C. R. Reed, L. A. Williams and Elton Williams. Burial was in the family lot on the J. S. Forbes farm, Currituck county, N. C.

Funeral Will Take Place Tomorrow From Grace Covenant Church.     Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Sheppard, 73 years old, mother of Captain J. W. Sheppard, of the Second police station, will be conducted tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock in Grace Covenant Presbyterian church. The burial will be in Riverview cemetery.
   Mrs. Sheppard died yesterday morning in her home, 318 South Cherry street. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. F. A. Boschom; two sons-Captain J. W. and J. E. Sheppard, and one sister, Mrs. W. L. Wade.                      .

  McClure Scott, Jr., 12 years old, died at the Naval Hospital at Quantico on Friday. He was the oldest son of Dr. McClure Scott, Medical Corps, U. S. N., and Mrs. Scott, of Millwood, Clarke county.

                     ZACHARIAH L. SHACKELFORD.
  Zachariah Lee Shackelford died at 9:55 o'clock yesterday morning in his residence, 1033 Prentis avenue, Prentis Place, at the age of 62 years.
  For the last forty years Mr. Shackelford made his home in this city, coming here from Gloucester county, Va., where he was born. For about thirty years he had been a contracting painter in Portsmouth.
  For the last year his health was gradually failing, but not until last Tuesday was he obliged to take to his bed.
  Two sons, William H. Shackelford and John L. Shackelford, survive him.
  Mr. Shackelford held membership in Naval Lodge No. 100 A. F. & A. M., and was also a member of Annex Fire Fire Company No. 2.
  As a tribute of respect to his memory, the bell in the Annex headquarters was tolled yesterday morning, after his death.
  The funeral service will take place at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon in the Shackelford residence. It will be attended by the Annex Fire Company, No. 5, in a body.

A Lovely Lady Passed Away Yesterday-Others Deaths and Funerals.
Mrs. Katie Semon, wife of Mr. Martin L. Semon, and daughter of the late Abraham Isear, of Georgetown, S. C., died yesterday morning at 11:15 o'clock at her home, No. 213 east Clay street.
Though married for five yars, deceased had only budded into womanhood, having just passed her 21st year. She has left behind her a void in many aching hearts, for during her short residence in this city she had endeared herself to a host of friends, through her loving and beautiful character.
The funeral will take place this afternoon at 4 o'clock from the mortuary chapel of the Hebrew Cemetery, Dr. E. N. Calisch officiating, and the pall-bearers will be Messrs. LeRoy Cohen, Lee Kahnwisler, Barney Meyers, Meno Miteidorfer, Wolf Miller, Sol Pearistine, Nathan Simons, and Albert Wise.

GLOUCESTER, VA., Sept. 8.-The funeral of Mrs. Georgie Sinclare Selden, widow of the late Robert C. Selden, took place from her home, Cloverfield, three o'clock this afternoon, the interment being in the burying ground at Sherwood, the rector of the parish. Rev. William Byrd Lee, officiating. Mrs. Selden's death was preceded by that of her husband one month, Mrs. Selden leaves four daughters, three sons.

   The funeral of Mrs. Alma Seward, of Norfolk, but formerly of this city, will take place at Shockoe-Hill Cemetery this morning. The remains will arrive at 8:40 from Essex county, where Mrs. Seward died at the residence of her parents. The funeral will occur as soon after as possible. Mrs. Seward was about 26 years of age. She was the daughter of Mr. John E. Parish, and of the late Mrs. R. E. Parish. She was well known here, but of late had resided in Norfolk.

  MONTEREY, VA., Jan. 25.--Addison Simmons, resident of the Crabbottom Valley, died suddenly Wednesday, a victim of paralysis. He was a prominent citizen of that valley, and a successful farmer and cattle dealer. He was twice married, and is survived by his second wife and three children, one of whom, Minor Simmons, is a well-known business man of that section.

                            Rev. William Sedwick.
  SHENANDFOAH, VA., Jan. 25.--Rev. William Sedwick, about 70 years old, for years a Methodist minister, resideing at Oak Hill, this county, died at his home, death being due to a stroke of paralysis suffered some years back, coupled with a complication of diseases. He was one of the most substantial farmers of the county, and a brother to former Sheriff of Page County N. T. Sedwick. He is survived by his widow and three daughters. An only son was killed in a railroad accident some years ago.

  SUFFOLK, VA., May 15.-James R. Smith died at his home near Driver, Va., last night, in the 83d year of his age. He is survived by two daughter and three sons, Mrs. J. L. Bond, of Driver, Va.; Mrs. M. L. Parker,of Portsmouth, Va.; E. W. Smith, of Suffolk, Va.; R.L. Smith, of Newport News, Va.; J. E. Smith, of driver, Va.; also twenty-one grandchildren, one great-grandchild, one sister, Mrs. C. H. Coles, of Portsmouth, Va., and one brother, I. W. Smith, of Sunbury, N. C.

                                 A Sad Death
CLIFTON FORGE, VA., January 4.-One of the saddest deaths that have occured in this city for years was that of Miss Hattie Surber. She was engaged in letter writing when accidentally she turned oover the lamp. The oil spilled, and reaching her clothing, they took fire, and before the flames could be extinguished she was fatally burned. She died at 3 o'clock this morning. Miss Surber was a very popular young lady, and her death has thrown a gloom over the entire community.

                           Mrs. Virginia C. Semmes.
Mrs. Virginia Catherine Semmes, wife of the late Douglas Ramsay Semmes, of Alexandria, Va., and mother of the Rev. Thomas Semmes, rector of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, died at 8 o'clock Sunday night, in the eighty-forth year of her age.
Mrs. Semmes attended church Sunday morning and was apaprently in the best of health and her death comes as a great shock to her friends, of which she has a great many in the city. She was the widow of Mr. Douglas R. Semmes.
The funeral will take place from Christ Church, Alexandria, to-day at 8 A. M.

STAUNTON, VA., July 20.-Funeral services were held at 5 o'clock this afternoon in St. Francis Cathlic Church, conducted by Rev. J. C. Crown, for John Sullivan, 84 years old, who died yesterday in the home of his daughter, Mrs. B. Brown, on Prospect Street. Mr. Sullivan, who was a veteran of the war Between the States, was formerly a constable of Beverly Manor District and also served as a special revenue agent until his health failed him about eight years ago. Surviving are five daughters, Mrs. B. Brown, Mrs. J. D. Anderson and Mrs. E. S. Stover, of this city, Mrs. W. H. Kelsey, of Blacksburg and Mrs. G. H. Wilson, of Jasper, Ore., sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Brown, of Norfolk, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas T. Sullivan, of Roanoke and J. Murray Brown, who is in training at Camp Trinkle, were here to attend the funeral.

                             Dr. Smithey Buried.
The funeral of Dr. Royal Bascomb Smithey, author, mathematician and educator,  who died Saturday at his home in Ashland, was held at 11 o'clock yesterday from the Duncan Memorial Chapel there. Dr. Smithey was the author of several textbooks and ranked as a leading mathematician.                      Mrs. Nannie Preston Summers.
ABINGDON, VA., June 13.--Mrs. Nannie Preston Summers died here to-day. She was the wife of Colonel John C. Summers, who was a member of the Constitutional Convention, and a daughter of Colonel John F. Preston, of Washington county. Mrs. Summers was a sister of Dr. R. J. Preston, superintendent of the Southwest Virginia Hospital, and Rev. Rhea Preston, president of a female   college in Greenville, S. C. Her husband and eight children.

WARRENTON, VA., June 13.--Anton Schwab, aged seventy-two, and an old resident of this community, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. E. Bishop, this afternoon, aftera lingering illness of some weeks.
He is survived by two daughters and five sons.

CHATHAM, VA., April 18.--Mrs. Susan Sours died atthe home of her son, Paul A. Sours, in Pittsylvania county, about four miles from this place, Tuesday, following an illness of long duration. She was seventy-eight years old, and is survived by D. A. and W. T. Sours, sons, and Mrs. John Hubbard, daughter, all of Pittsylvania county. Interment was in the Chatham Cemetery Wednesday.

BLACKSTONE, VA., April 18.--The funeral of Miss Eva Sneed, the daughter of Mr. Edmund Sneed, of this town, took place at the home of her father here this afternoon. The Rev. Mr. Ritter, the Baptist minister, officiating, assisted by the Revs. W. H. Boggs and John O. Morse, of the Methodist Church. Miss Snead[sic] was about eighteen years of age, and had been sick and in bed for a long time, and her death was not a surprise to those near her. The remains were interred in Lakewood Cemetery, of this town.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA., May 15.-Mrs. Lucy Stakes, widow of the late Edward Stakes, died at her home at Lancaster Courthouse a few days ago, aged sixty-eight years. She is survived by two sons.

Pine, Va., Feb. 20.--Death has claimed another of the older residents of this place in the person of Mrs. Helen Sayers. The deceased was the daughter of John T. Sayers and was born near Draper 61 years ago. She is survived by her husband and the following children: Misses Bessie, Fannie Sue, John, Carrie and Earnest. There are two sisters, Mrs. Henry D. Howard and Mrs. Elizabeth Calfee, both of this place.

Mr. James H. Sullivan, who served during the Civil War in Company B, Thirtieth Virginia Infantry, died on Thursday at the Soldiers Home.
The funeral took place at 10 o'clock yesterday morning from the Home Chapel. The interment was made in Hollywood.

CHATHAM, VA., December 14.-Mrs. Mary M. Spruce died very suddenly of heart  disease at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ro__ Easley, near Babl___?, Pittsylvania county, Thursday night. She was sixty-six years old and is survived y two sons, S. S. Spruce and G. S. Spruce of this place, three brothers, H. S., G. W. and I. C. White, all of Pittsylvania; three sisters-Mrs. John Gatewood and Mrs. Edward Gatewood, of this county, and Ms. Archer Shelton, of Greensboro, N. Mrs. Martha C. Simmons died last night in her home at 1112 East Clay street. She was 77 years old. Mrs. Simmons leaves a son, Walter D. Simmons, who lives at Grove avenue and Shepard street, where the funeral services will beheld at 10:30 A. M. to-morrow. Burial in Petersburg.
